Abstract
The coronavirus disease 2 019 (COVID-19) viruses, which emerged at the end of 2019, displayed genetic variations in the replication and transmission stages. As a result, COVID-19 viruses spread globally in the form of many variants. The aim of this report was to conduct genomic surveillance in the Chungcheong region of the Republic of Korea (ROK). The ROK¡¯s Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) has been established and 5 Regional Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were newly established to actively defend against COVID-19. Chungcheong Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention conducts genomic surveillance to track and analyze the source of infection and to identify genetic mutations of the COVID-19 virus. The findings of this report were that new variants of COVID-19 like alpha, delta, and omicron variants emerged in Chungcheong region. Based on this report, we recommended continuous genomic surveillance for new variants to support scientific disease control.
